Netflix

With nearly 150 million subscribers around the world, Netflix has a commanding lead in the streaming wars. But it’s also facing heavy competition from deep-pocketed conglomerates like Disney, Apple, and AT&T, and an ongoing wave of narrow, targeted streaming sites like CBS All Access and DC Universe, which can draw on popular existing franchises for original content. As fewer companies are willing to license out their films and shows to other streaming sites, Netflix is pouring billions of dollars annually into its own original content. Follow along with The Verge as we look at Netflix’s new films and shows, its evolving strategies against new entrants in the market, and how it’s leveraging its technological and marketing lead.

The live-action Yu Yu Hakusho series looks like a classic Netflix joint.

Especially in a post One Piece world, there’s always some hope of Netflix’s live-action anime / manga adaptations exceeding everyone’s expectations.

But judging from the looks of the wigs and special effects featured in the new trailer for Robot Communications’ upcoming spin on Yu Yu Hakusho, we might be in for another clunker.

“Ever since I was a kid, I’ve always wanted to be a criminal.”

Netflix has released a trailer for its new crypto documentary, Bitconned, about the rise and fall of Centra Tech, a scam that was part of the wave of initial coin offerings in 2017. The blowback from the scheme caught DJ Khaled and Floyd Mayweather, who had promoted it — they were fined by the SEC. Ray Trapani, one of the co-founders, appears to be a key narrator of the Netflix documentary.

Today on The Vergecast: How Planet Earth gets made, and how Netflix shows you what to watch.

Do you ever open the Netflix app and wonder why you’re seeing what you’re seeing? It turns out the story is both more and less complicated than you might think — and resistant to all my conspiracy theories about Netflix bullying you into watching stuff.

Also, if you haven’t been watching this season of Planet Earth, you’re missing out. And the stories behind the way the filmmakers capture incredible footage in awful conditions will only blow your mind more. Because this is The Vergecast, and care too much about drone cameras.

“It’s a different sort of vibe.”

That’s Zack Snyder in Wired talking about the differences between theatrical and streaming movies — particularly when it comes to grabbing people right away — ahead of the release of Rebel Moon on Netflix.

On the streamer, though, you have to be careful with the opening of the movies because the barrier for entry is really easy. But also the barrier for leaving is very easy. The balance is a lot more difficult on a streamer than in a theater.

Scraping a snow shovel to make the Netflix logo sound.

This kind of video gets me in trouble at home because I will try to emulate it for fun. Just hours of recording noises and editing them, to the exclusion of all of the reasonable, responsible things I should do instead.

Anyway, here’s someone smacking, plucking, and scraping disparate household items to get the Netflix logo sound.

*pounds table* Show me the creatures.

This is the second teaser for Netflix’s Gyeongseong Creature, following a release date announcement at Geeked Week earlier in the month. And while the show looks great, I am just itching to see what these creatures actually look like. I guess we’ll find out pretty soon: part one of the series starts streaming on December 22nd.

Netflix wants its money back after a $55 million production fell apart.

That’s according to The New York Times, which claims filmmaker Carl Erik Rinsch pocketed the millions of dollars Netflix transferred him for the production of a sci-fi series that we’ll probably never see:

Netflix wired Mr. Rinsch’s production company $11 million, bringing its total outlay to more than $55 million... Mr. Rinsch transferred $10.5 million of the $11 million to his personal brokerage account at Charles Schwab and, using options, placed risky bets on the stock market.

Rinsch and Netflix are “now locked in a confidential arbitration proceeding,” the NYT reports. He reportedly claims Netflix owes him “at least $14 million in damages.”

Black Mirror, which is basically a docuseries at this point, has been renewed for a seventh season.

As our world’s become increasingly filled with artificial intelligence, robotic dogs armed with guns, and social media platforms run by fashy lunatics, it’s gotten harder to enjoy Black Mirror as mere speculative fiction. But even though the show doesn’t always feel as science-fictional as it used to, that’s not stopping Netflix from bringing it back for a seventh season.

It’s curtains for Netflix’s Shadow and Bone series.

Netflix’s adaptation of author Leigh Bardugo’s Shadow and Bone series seemed like it could have been the streamer’s next big hit when it was first dropped back in 2021. But after just two seasons, Netflix has done what Netflix does, and announced that the show has been cancelled.

The Netflix Cup: Netflix’s first live sports event was a bit of a mess.

And that was before Carlos Sainz dropped the inaugural championship trophy.

Marky Mark joked about Bert Kreischer being “security” after the comedian grabbed a protester who ran onto the course, there were constant audio issues, no one seemed to be clear on the rules, and a juddering framerate problem (possibly due to incorrect shutter settings) ruined Netflix’s attempt to recreate the NFL’s popularmegalodon” close-up camera angle. But, at least the stream never crashed?

Netflix’s first live sports broadcast starts at 6PM ET.

After Netflix’s live Love is Blind reunion show ran into some issues this spring, it’s trying to go live again.

Tonight, its first-ever live sports broadcast pairs F1 racers from Drive to Survive — conveniently in the US for the Las Vegas Grand Prix this weekend— with golfers from Full Swing in a chase for the inaugural Netflix Cup. What might come next? Maybe Netflix could bid on future NBA In-Season Tournament games (presumably, that name is a placeholder for the Netflix NBA Cup).

(Disclosure: Vox Media Studios produced Full Swing, and The Verge recently produced a series with Netflix.)

Zack Snyder’s Netflix sci-fi epic, Rebel Moon, has its first full trailer.

Netflix said it would drop the trailer today for Geeked Week, and it’s here. From the looks of things, it’s got all the hallmarks of a Zack Snyder movie — grandiose shots, very buff warrior types, and super slow-mo.

Rebel Moon starts streaming on December 22nd.

One last thing.

A new creature feature.

Gyeongseong Creature is the latest in a growing list of Korean series on Netflix, and it looks like a fascinating bit of monster mayhem up against the backdrop of real-world history. The first teaser doesn’t show much of the actual creatures, but we’ll find out more when the show starts streaming on December 22nd.

The Devil May Cry anime is coming, Netflix promises.

There’s not much new info in this latest video, but showrunner Adi Shankar does seem very excited about the upcoming adaptation of the beloved action series. “We’re working very hard,” he says.

Good vs. evil, but with cats.

We already knew that Netflix was working on an animated series based on the card game Exploding Kittens, and now we have our very first glimpse at the series, which features god in the body of a cat and a very confounding garage door. The show is expected to start streaming in 2024.

The distressed look.

Saturday’s edition of Geeked Week opened with the first trailer for Damsel, in which “a dutiful damsel agrees to marry a handsome prince, only to find the royal family has recruited her as a sacrifice to repay an ancient debt.” It stars Millie Bobby Brown as the princess, is directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, and will hit Netflix in 2024.

Another afternoon of Netflix announcements.

For the third day in a row, Netflix is streaming a whole bunch of news about its upcoming shows, movies, and games. Today’s once again takes place at 4PM ET, and will include, among other things, a first look at the film Damsel with Stranger Things star Millie Bobby Brown.

Superman Legacy is still on time.

Not every comic book movie is getting a studio delay following the end of the actors strike. James Gunn posted on Threads today that Superman Legacy will still reboot the DC extended universe on its original planned date of July 11th, 2025.

If you need your Zac Snyder-era DCEU fix, much of it will shamble on next month on Netflix.

The message is clear in Leave the World Behind’s new teaser clip.

The scale and gravity of the imminent danger everyone is in isn’t clear to humans in Netflix’s upcoming feature length adaptation of Rumaan Alam’s novel Leave the World Behind.

But in a new clip from the film, every single forest animal living in the northeast coast seems to know what the deal is, and that they need to get the hell out of dodge before whatever the danger is gets them.

Masters of the Universe: Revolution’s teaser is a reminder to not skip leg day.

Netflix’s Masters of the Universe: Revolution series from Kevin Smith will see Eternia fall after Skeletor (Mark Hamill) wins in an epic battle with He-Man (Chris Wood) that damages the very fabric of reality.

But while the sword-bearing hero might be on the ropes, the show’s new teaser trailer definitely makes it seem like he might end up crushing his nemesis with those massive tree trunks Powerhouse worked to hard to animate.

Lofi beats to kill and relax to.

Katana Zero, a game with one of the chillest soundtracks this side of Minecraft, is the next indie hit coming to mobile via Netflix. In the game, you play a samurai tasked with using his powers of precognition and sword to kill baddies in one hit. Problem is, he can get one-hit KO’d, too forcing the samurai to rewind and try again.

Katana Zero launches on mobile via Netflix soon.
