For more than 25 years, Sony’s PlayStation has been synonymous with gaming. It's given players experiences like God of War, The Last of Us, and Final Fantasy VII alongside technological innovations from CD-ROMs all the way up to 4K, VR, and cloud gaming. There have even been attempts at portable gaming with the PSP and Vita. Across multiple generations the company has been a pioneer, starting with the original PlayStation and continuing with the PS5.

Sony’s accessible PlayStation controller goes on sale today.

The Access controller, which is designed to offer a more accommodating way for people with disabilities to play PS5 games, is now widely available to buy for $89.99 / €89.99. To mark the occasion, Sony has put out a video featuring some of the people it consulted with on the project, showing the different configurations the controller can be used in.

Another trailer for Contra: Operation Galuga.

The upcoming game puts a modern spin on the classic run ‘n’ gun, with its latest trailer highlighting the roster of playable characters and some revamped maps. Contra: Operation Galuga comes from Konami and WayForward, and will be available for the Nintendo Switch, Xbox, PS5, PS4, and PC in “early” 2024.

The Last of Us Part II’s roguelike mode looks brutal.

In a trailer for the new “No Return” mode (which might get buried by... you know), you can see how you’ll be able to play as different TLOU characters and take on zombies while dealing with “unique gameplay modifiers” (like one that appears to make a zombie invisible).

The mode will be included with The Last of Us Part II Remastered, which is set to release on January 19th.

This is why we can’t have nice [full seasons of Auction Kings].

Kotaku wrote yesterday that PlayStation owners will lose “previously purchased Discovery content” on December 31st after a change in Sony’s licensing agreements.

There’s almost nothing to mourn in Sony’s list of disappearing shows (apart from 20 seasons of Mythbusters, that is), but it’s an annoying reminder of the woefully ethereal nature of online digital entertainment.

Car games sure do look good these days.

Here’s a fun guessing game for your Saturday morning. Chris Rosales of The Drive took a Lexus LC 500 for a spin over several days to find the locations used in Gran Turismo 7’s Scapes photo mode and recreate the shots himself.

I embedded one of the images here, but be sure to head over to the article to see the rest.

Two pictures of a yellow Lexus LC 500 — the top is the real thing, while the bottom is in-game. Both taken in Los Angeles, CA.
The watermark gives it away.

PlayStation controllers are increasingly popular on PC.

In a blog post announcing new controller-filtering features for Steam, Valve shared data about how popular Sony’s gamepads have gotten. In the past year, 27 percent of controller-based gaming sessions used a PlayStation controller, a 4x increase compared to four years ago. I’ve been using my DualSense with a long-ass USB cable for the lowest input lag and haptic trigger support, but apparently some newer games support the triggers wirelessly.

Please insert Disc 2.

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is only a few months away, launching on PS5 on February 29th. In preparation, Square Enix has published a video recapping the events of Remake as well as a short guide on the who, what, and where of Rebirth.

I’d give the guide a pass if you want to remain totally unspoiled for when Rebirth drops. But the Remake recap video (I need to know why Square Enix has such an obsession with the letter “R”,) is a really good primer on the first game if you never played or, like me, simply forgot everything that happened.

Rumors of a remastered Last of Us Part II mount.

After a Naughty Dog staffer seemed to let slip news of the remaster, Insider Gaming reports on new rumors that it’s on the way. The PS4 game is only three years old and has already received a 60fps PS5 patch, but who can blame Naughty Dog for wanting to have a new release on shelves in time for the TV show’s second season?

PS5 ‘slim’ disc drive swaps seem pretty straightforward.

Sure, it’s annoying that the disc drive needs an internet connection to be set up, but if you need to swap in a new one for whatever reason, you can just drop it in the console and register it with the online handshake, as shown in this video from YouTuber Mystic.

If you want to learn more about the new PS5, check out our hands-on.

Game development is hard, and glitches are hilarious.

Santa Monica Studio is commemorating the one year anniversary of the release of God of War Ragnarök with a montage of humorous glitches, bugs, and odd moments from the game’s development.

There’s just something about game glitches that gets me cackling like a gremlin and tearing up with laughter.

Sony pushes back its live service game ambitions.

The company says it now expects to release six live service titles by March 2026, half what it previously planned. Bloomberg has said Sony’s teams are having “mixed levels of success” with the live services push, and that it has cut back the team working on its Last of Us multiplayer title. Even Sony-owned Destiny 2 developer Bungie has been hit with layoffs and delays.

Gran Turismo 7’s big Spec II update launches tonight.

Expect a new progression dashboard, new cars, and new tracks, as well as some PS5-only tweaks like 4-player split screen and the Sophy AI driver agent.

Sophy has been touted as a scientific breakthrough made with reinforcement training to master both superhuman lap times and racing etiquette (unlike the people you race online in GT and Forza). Now, Sophy 2.0 can drive 340 cars (up from four in its previous iteration) on nine tracks. However, GTPlanet notes it’s unclear how many instances of Sophy can take the track at once.

Cross-progression is finally coming to Apex Legends.

Apex Legends has thrived since its surprise launch four years ago, and while it has thrived since then, the fact that players couldn’t migrate acquired content and stats across platforms has become ridiculous as competitors like Fortnite, Warzone, and even Overwatch merged accounts across PC, PlayStation, Xbox, and Switch.

But now, Apex will finally join them in a “phased launch” along with rolling out a new season, Ignite, a new legend with a tragic Titanfall-related backstory, and a smaller Storm Point map on October 31st.

I just have one question about this Polyphony Digital co-developed car interior.

Nissan says it teamed up with the Gran Turismo developer on an interior for the Hyper Force EV that was just revealed at the Japan Mobility Show 2023. Part of a concept series that includes the low-poly spaceship on wheels-looking Hyper Adventure, this coupe is “designed for racing enthusiasts and gamers who crave the adrenaline rush of the racetrack but are also eco-conscious.”

Yes, this continues a tradition established with the iconic GT-R, but why not Sony’s own electric car or one with Sony’s Afeela partner Honda?
